SA winger parts ways with Swedish outfit

Talented South African winger Tashreeq Matthews has parted ways with his Swedish outfit Varbergs Bols.

The Ajax Cape Town product leaves the Allsvenskan side after almost three seasons at the club.

The 21-year-old winger has terminated his contract with the top division club as he looks to play regular first-team football following his return from a serious injury.

Matthews has had a difficult 2022 with injuries and suspension preventing him from playing more games this season.

He has only made 10 appearances in 2022 without scoring or assisting any goal, which is a big frustration considering his exploits in 2021, where he scored five goals and assisted another five strikes in the Allsvenskan.

His impressive performances last season landed him the 2021 Breakout Player of the Year award, but he has not been able to replicate those performances in the new campaign.

Varbergs BoIs have officially announced the attacker’s departure from the club, wishing him the best for the future.

“Varbergs BoIs and Tashreeq Matthews go their separate ways. We thank Matthews for entertaining us for two and a half years – we have agreed with him to break the deal,” the club said in a statement.

Manager Jocke Pearson also explained the decision of the club to allow the former South African youth international to leave.

“Tassie wants a new challenge this Autumn after an injury-filled spring with us. We wish him well for the future,” Pearson said.

It is unclear where the dynamic winger will play moving forward, but he has been linked with giants AIK and the high running IK Sirius.

Matthews has represented South Africa at Under 17 and Under 20 levels, but he is yet to play for the senior team.
