A South African teenager is being assessed at an English League One club.

Pretoria-born midfielder Kgaogelo Chauke is currently undergoing a one-week assessment at Exeter City, hoping to impress and join the club on a season-long loan from Premier League club Southampton.

Chauke recently signed a new and improved two-year deal with the Saints, keeping him at the club until June 2024.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 19-year-old said he is thrilled to extend his stay at St Mary’s, where he has been harnessing his skills for the past five years.

“I’m delighted to be here. I know the club well now. I’ve been here for a couple of years. I just want to keep taking every opportunity I can get.”

The dynamic youngster who can play anywhere in the middle of the park was included in Exeter’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Truro City FC on Tuesday evening – he came on as a 70th-minute substitute.

Chauke immediately changed the game with his elegance on the ball and his creative midfield play – he later scored a goal as Exeter thumped their opponents 3-0.

His impressive performance earned him rave reviews from the club’s supporters, who called for his immediate addition to the club’s roster for the upcoming season.

Exeter will campaign in the 2022/23 League One season following their automatic promotion from League Two last season – they finished the season in the second spot with 84 points in 46 games.

It has been a positive journey for Chauke, born in South Africa but relocated to England with his parents early.

He impressed Southampton scouts in a tournament where he played for Thatcham Town in 2017 – he joined the saints in the same year and has never looked back.

The teenager is yet to represent South Africa at any level but recently acquired his passport and is eligible to play for Bafana Bafana.
