  • Biovac received regulatory clearance to start clinical trials for an oral cholera vaccine, positioning South Africa to become the first fully domestic African manufacturer.
  • Health Minister Motsoaledi called the trial a “historic milestone,” critical for enhancing national health security and boosting Africa’s vaccine self-reliance amidst rising outbreaks.
  • Phase 1 trials focusing on safety began in October 2025, with potential approval and deployment across Africa anticipated by 2028.

Biovac has received approval from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to begin clinical trials for its oral cholera vaccine.

This landmark development could position South Africa as the first African country to fully manufacture a life-saving cholera vaccine domestically.

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi hailed the move as a historic milestone, stressing that local production strengthens the nation’s ability to respond swiftly to outbreaks and boosts Africa’s self-reliance in vaccine manufacturing.

The effort aligns with the African Union’s goal for 60% of vaccines to be produced on the continent by 2030, addressing growing outbreaks and chronic vaccine shortages.

Phase 1 of the trial began in October 2025 and focuses on adult safety.

If successful, the vaccine could be ready for approval and use in Africa by 2028.
