Pitso Sends Message To Ellis, Banyana

Pitso Mosimane has sent a message to Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis and her team after they qualified for the WAFCON semi-final and next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Banyana beat Tunisia 1-0 on Thursday evening thanks to a solitary goal by Jermaine Seoposenwe in the first half.

The result ensured Banyana’s spot among Africa’s top four at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with all four – Zambia, Morocco and Nigeria are the other three – automatically qualifying for the 2023 World Cup.

Banyana’s fine exploits have brought many South African football fans into joy, with even Mosimane, one of Africa’s most successful coaches, sending a message of congrats to Ellis and her team.

“Thanks for taking us to the World Cup, you and your girls are an inspiration to the country. The girls will never disappoint,” he wrote on social media.

Ellis took over as Banyana coach from Vera Pauw in 2016 and, although only officially named head coach in 2018, has never looked back.

During her reign, Banyana have now qualified for two successive World Cups – the first two in Banyana history – as well as three successive WAFCON semi-finals.

They will face Zambia’s Copper Queens in this year’s semi-final on Monday for a place in the 2022 WAFCON final against either hosts Morocco or record champions Nigeria.
