Percy Tau’s admission after Bafana Bafana omission

Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau has made an admission about his form following his omission from the national team.

Bafana coach Hugo Broos detailed a conversation with the Al Ahly star back in September when he omitted him from the squad that played Sierra Leone and Botswana.

Broos was updating Tau on why he was not part of the national team he had called. The Belgian was concerned about the former Mamelodi Sundowns star’s lack of game time.

PERCY TAU AGREES

“Percy knows what I’m thinking about him. He agrees with that. You are not ready for the national team when you don’t play.

“And that doesn’t mean if you are not playing two weeks for an injury or what. This is not what I mean. But see what Percy did from September last year until now,” Broos told FARPost.

According to the AFCON-winning coach, there is an understanding between himself and Tau regarding his issue.

“I spoke to him a month ago during the September camp. I said to him, ‘when you don’t play, I can’t call you”.

“He said, ‘it’s better for me also because I’m not 100%. Don’t think a guy who’s not played for three months is ready for the national team.”

Broos believes a fully fit Tau will transform Bafana’s attack. “Let’s hope that he plays in the next month. Let’s hope. I hope it because I know his qualities.

“And I would be pleased if tomorrow Percy Tau is in our team, hundred per cent. Because of that, I know he puts something extra on the team,” he concluded.

LAST BAFANA CALL-UP

Tau received his last call-up for Bafana Bafana earlier this year in June when South Africa took on Morocco in the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Since the Egyptian League resumed for the 2022/23 season, Tau has been used as a substitute in two out of three games played by Al Ahly this season.

In all the games that the Bafana Bafana international came in as a substitute this season, he played for 33 minutes.

He will be hoping to stay injury-free this season as he looks to reclaim his starting place.
