Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi insists that the fact that they have already qualified for the knockout stages of the CAF Champions League will not mean anything when they take on Al-Merrikh on Saturday.

The Brazilians will host the Sudanese club in the last match of Group A at FNB Stadium at 15:00.

Sundowns have secured the top position in the group, while Al Ahly and Al Hilal will have to compete for the second position to confirm their place in the knockout stages.

“For us, it really does not mean much the fact that we have already secured our place in the quarterfinals,” said Mngqithi during a media briefing on Thursday morning.

“I think I said it before, our biggest competition is ourselves, we have a bigger responsibility to improve or to better our benchmark. Our benchmark is the 13 points that we got in the group stages last season, and we have a responsibility to better that.

Because it is very important for us as a club, to minimize the possibility of seeing how stressful it is when you lose a match so we have to try and make sure that we give this match the respect that it deserves,” he said.

“We go out there with the mentality to win because that is very important in how we want to finish the season, as it is now we are saying in the past two years we have only three matches and that for us is very important to try and make sure that we minimize possibilities of losing matches.”
