Orlando Pirates and Bafana legend John Moeti passes on

SAFA have confirmed the passing of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates legend, John Moeti.

Moeti is reported to have passed away in the early hours of Monday morning, 6 February 2023. 

The man nicknamed ‘Dungi’ passed on at his home, surrounded by “his family and brethren in prayer.” 

The sad news was confirmed by the family spokesperson Victor Rakhale. 

“It’s with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John ‘Dungi’ Moeti,” Rakhale told SAFA media department.

WHAT HAPPENED TO JOHN MOETI 

“John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care. 

“He succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning [6 February 2023]. 

“We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support. The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss” 

SAFA PRESIDENT SENDS HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO THE MOETI FAMILY

Meanwhile, SAFA president Danny Jordaan sent his heartfelt condolences to the Moeti family, friends and the entire football fraternity.

“The South African Football Association and I wish to convey our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of Dungi Moeti,” said the SAFA president.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and friends.”

Moeti was part of the Buccaneers squad that won the CAF Champions League in 1995. The Soweto giants got the better of ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast in the final.

The legend also had a stint with SuperSport United and recorded 29 caps for Bafana Bafana between 1995 and 1999. 

Moeti was a member of the Bafana squad that won the 1996 African Cup of Nations.

The funeral details will be revealed in due course.
