Cape Town City goalkeeper Hugo Marques has extended his stay at the DStv Premiership club for another season, the club announced on Tuesday.

Marques has enjoyed a fantastic debut season since joining Citizens at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign on a free transfer after spending most of his career in Europe.

The 36-year-old has played a major role in City’s top-two chase, keeping 14 clean sheets in 27 appearances, which is a new record for the Cape Town-based side.

Angola even recalled him to the national team amid his imperious run of form in South Africa, which has even kept Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Darren Keet on the sidelines since his return from a long-term injury. His new contract will expire at the end of next season June 2023.

City are currently in the driving seat for finishing second on the log and will next welcome AmaZulu FC on 14 May before facing their rivals Stellenbosch FC on the last day of the season.
