The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa says it wants Eskom to resolve disputes around employee allowances.

It says it won’t be easy to reach an agreement if employment conditions remain unchanged.

Eskom is proposing for the lowest earners to get a higher increase and the higher earners to get a lower one.

Unions are demanding the same increase across the board.

Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said: “The issue of the conditions of services is really a burning issue for our members.

“The one demand is across the board increase and the other demand that has to be resolved in this round of negotiations is that Eskom went a unilaterally took away various allowances that workers depend on.

“This issue mostly affects field workers who work in remote power stations.

“If I can give you a practical example, a worker will be asked to go to a very remote area to repair a technical issue. It may take the worker two hours to get to that site and 10 minutes to resolve the issue,” she said.

“Eskom will only pay them for the 10 minutes of work. They’re not going to pay them for the two hours it took them to get there. Those were things that were things were part of the conditions in the past now they have been taken away …. until we can resolve the issues the conditions of service it’s going to be a struggle to find an agreement with Eskom.”
