The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has issued an urgent safety advisory for all nationals in South Africa following violent clashes in the Eastern Cape.
The unrest was sparked by the controversial coronation of a Nigerian “king” in KuGompo, an event local leaders branded an affront to South African sovereignty.
Protests quickly turned violent, resulting in stabbings, the torching of over a dozen vehicles, and the looting of shops.
In response, diplomatic officials have ordered a suspension of all Nigerian socio-cultural activities and urged citizens to avoid any “ostentatious” public displays that might provoke further hostility.
Following the volatile developments in the Eastern Cape, Nigerian nationals are urged to prioritise personal security and maintain a low profile.
The High Commission has advised citizens to moderate their movements and strictly avoid any involvement in demonstrations or counter-protests.
To de-escalate tensions, all socio-cultural gatherings are to be suspended indefinitely. Residents are further cautioned against making provocative statements online or engaging in flamboyant public displays.
The High Commission further advise that it is essential to remain law-abiding and respectful of local customs during this period of heightened sensitivity.
Any immediate threats to safety should be reported to local authorities. For ongoing support, the High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate General in Johannesburg remain available for consultation.
