Mothiba eyeing Bafana return | African News

France-based forward Lebo Mothiba is angling a return to the national team after recovering from a long-term knee and hamstring injury setback that kept him on the sidelines for almost two years, writes Otis Ntshangase.

The 26-year-old, who is currently on loan at Ligue 1 side Troyes from Strasbourg, is patiently pushing to be 100% fit then challenge for a place in Bafana.

“Right now, my headspace is to get back and be fully fit; that is where my focus is. Take things step-by-step because I don’t want to rush anything; that is why my injury took so long,” said Mothiba.

The striker further stated that he would welcome the Bafana call-up whenever he is needed to represent the country.

“I want to help my country; the coach Hugo Broos will decide. If I keep going like this, I will get my chance; they will call me. It will be an honour.”

“When you come to represent your country, you have to be fully fit; you cannot be at 70 or 80%,” he added.

The Troyes forward, who is capped 14 times for Bafana, will be looking to help the national team qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations if he receives a call-up. Mothiba has scored two goals in eight games since the start of the season.
