University of Pretoria coach Tlisane Motaung says the club’s objective hasn’t changed as they are still eyeing a return to the South African topflight ahead of the new campaign starting in September.
The mentor, however, admits that it won’t be an easy walk in the park as other 15 Motsepe Foundation Championship teams are also eyeing winning the league and securing promotion to DStv Premiership.
In the just-ended 2021/22 DStv Premiership campaign, the league shaped into a two-horse race seeing AmaTuks and Richards Bay fighting pound-for-pound to get automatic promotion.
In the end, the Natal Rich Boys emerged successful, while the Tshwane outfit competed in the PSL Promotion/Relegation playoffs and unfortunately lost to Swallows FC on the last day.
“The objective still remains the same, to challenge for and win the league. We have to do everything in our power to achieve it. We know it won’t be easy. We know other teams got plans going forward to compete,” Motaung told AmaTuks media.
“It was exciting to see some of the lads that we went with the previous season and also guys that we have signed.”
The 38-year-old further revealed that they will bolster their squad with new faces after losing players to DStv Premiership team like Keegan Allan, a young versatile defender who was snatched by Swallows FC earlier this week.
“We have to get the right players, the ones we lost that have done well. We need to replace them with the other guys that are at their level even better than those. Three reported already, and one is still coming.”
“We lost a couple of guys to some PSL teams, something that excites us. We have given them an opportunity, they took it, and they went to greener pastures. We are a club that doesn’t block opportunities to players,” he concluded.
The PSL is yet to release the fixtures for the second-tier league; however, many teams have started with their pre-season preparations.
