Morocco To Have Friendly Before SA Clash, Bafana Not?

Morocco have arranged a friendly ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against South Africa next month, while Bafana Bafana have seemingly not.

The Atlas Lions, unlike Bafana, have scheduled a friendly match against Cape Verde on 12 June and the game will take place at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat (21:00).

That will give Morocco much-needed preparation before they face Bafana after a two-and-a-half months break from international football.

The South African Football Association, according to sources, have not considered a friendly match but coach Hugo Broos might still request one.

Broos’ side will host Morocco at FNB Stadium on 17 June (18:00), as confirmed by CAF.

This game, for both nations, is a formality as Bafana and Morocco have already qualified for the AFCON finals in Ivory Coast next year.

Bafana drew and beat Liberia in the double header in March, collecting four points in three matches, to book their spot in the tournament that will take place in Ivory Coast in January and February.

On other hand, Morocco who made history by becoming the first Africa nation to reach the World Cup semi-final in last year’s event in Qatar, is perched at the top of Group K with six points after two matches – they beat Bafana and Liberia respectively.

Zimbabwe was disqualified after they couldn’t overturn the FIFA ban, meaning the group, instead of having four nations, was narrowed down to three.

While Bafana will be done playing in the qualifiers after they face Morocco, the North African country will conclude their four allocated matches against bottom-placed Liberia on 4 September.

Meanwhile, CAF has on Thursday confirmed that the official draw of the Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 will be conducted on Thursday, 12 October 2023.
