A South African midfielder could make a return to his former club in Europe.

31-year-old midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo has been a free agent since leaving Major League Soccer (MLS) side FC Cincinnati in December 2021, but the anchor could find himself returning to his former club FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie for the upcoming season.

Mokotjo parted ways with Cincinnati after both parties agreed to mutually end their relationship before the start of the 2022 MLS season.

The Free State-born star has been with Twente since February (2022) after the club agreed to allow him to undergo his recovery programme under their supervision following a meniscal injury he sustained late last season.

Speaking to the media, Twente sporting director Jan Streuer confirmed that a return is on the cards for the former PEC Zwolle midfielder, who made over 100 appearances in the three seasons he spent at the club before moving to England to join FC Brentford in 2017.

“The intention when he came here was that he was fit around March. That was not the case. Now he will have to be fit and show that he is top fit to be eligible for a contract.

“He knows exactly what the situation is. If he’s fit, he’s a very good player for us. That’s the situation.

“We’re going to see what we’re going to do when he’s really fit. He’s definitely a serious option.”
