Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele admits Hugo Broos had no influence on tactics and squad selection for the recent African Nations Championship (CHAN) games.
After the goalless draw at Dobsonville Stadium, Mkhalele lamented the lack of impetus from the youthful squad and when asked about whether Broos had any influence in the team he stated he’s just been updating the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations winning coach.
“In terms of the squad selection, we worked with the U23 coach in terms of selecting for COSAFA and when it concluded we felt it was better to continue with that team that to start assembling a new team,” Mkhalele said.
“This is due to the short period of preparing players for this game so we felt we needed to continue with that set of players. But unfortunately, a week before we went to Comoros, then a lot of players, key players were withdrawn from the squad. Then we had to juggle around and bring in new players.
“In terms of the influence of the coach on the tactics, he didn’t have any influence because he gave me the mandate saying go there and apply what you see and understand with what you have. Yes, I’ve been in constant communication with the coach to update with what’s been going on in the team.”
South Africa will travel to Angola for the 1st leg of the second-round qualifier in the last week of August before the return leg in South Africa a week later.
Algeria (hosts), Morocco and Libya are the only teams already qualified for the 18-nation continental showpiece thus far.
