Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s CEO, Louis Heyneman, has slammed Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s latest proposal.
This is after Mthethwa resuscitated a 2018 proposal for a R30-million National Philharmonic Orchestra programme.
Heyneman says the minister is out of touch with the realities of artists in this country.
“If the government wanted to fund [the] development of young musicians this is not the best way.
“It’s duplication and a waste of taxpayers money. I don’t think the minister has an idea of what’s happening in concert halls,” Heyneman said.
“They’re out of touch. In Cape Town, we’ve been growing grassroot training programme and academy for more than 15 years and many of our young players from all communities have moved to the professional arena. Creating a national showcase orchestra is a duplication and is very costly.”
