Middendorp Gives Update On Akpeyi

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has not yet been unveiled by Swallows despite joining the club in January and Ernst Middendorp has now addressed the situation.

The shot-stopper has been training with Swallows since September but they couldn’t sign him, as they were still banned by FIFA in signing players.

In January, after their ban was lifted, Akpeyi officially joined the club, as reported by iDiski Times, but the Nigeria international is still waiting for his work permit – hence he hasn’t been unveiled by the Dube Birds.

“Yeah, obviously Macheke got it [the work permit] a little bit quicker. You can’t force it. [We’re] working on it,” Middendorp told the media at DHL Stadium.

“We were hoping it will come right but that’s not the case. But let’s see what’s happening during the week.”

The relegation-threatened Swallows have conceded five goals in the last two games, losing 3-0 to Stellenbosch in the Nedbank Cup before a 2-0 defeat to Cape Town City in the league on Sunday.

The defeat left Swallows in 14th position, level on 21 points with Maritzburg United, who sit in the relegation/promotion playoff spot.
