McCarthy calls for equality in men’s and women’s football | African News

Former Bafana striker Benni McCarthy suggests that football should follow tennis’ footsteps where both the men’s and women’s game are at par.

In tennis, both men’s and women’s games get the same recognition and respect, and there is no comparison.

The all-time top scorer for Bafana spoke on the sidelines of the Heineken All-Invitational initiative to promote the women’s game.

“The women’s game should be evolving and should be almost at par as men’s game because you want them to be on a certain level. If you can watch tennis, the WTA and ATP Tours, men’s and women’s tennis is at par,” said McCarthy.

“People don’t compare Serena Williams with Roger Federer; they don’t compare women’s best players like Iga Świątek to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Men’s tennis is men’s tennis, rated on its own right and women’s tennis is also rated on its own right.”

The former AmaZulu coach believes women footballers are being looked down upon. Therefore they will not reach their best level as nobody is paying attention to their game.

“This initiative from Heineken is one of its kind and one of its first because some of the women’s footballers that are incredible are still pulled down and don’t get the recognition to be at the level. I hope it will continue to generate this kind of attention, hoping in the near future the women’s game will be where it belongs,” he added.

“Having a football match five-a-side, having both men and women play in one team, get to showcase their talent and the levels where they are at is incredible.”
