Matthews Confirms First SSU Signing

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has confirmed their first signing ahead of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.

United unveiled their former head coach Gavin Hunt on Thursday morning as he returns to the club where he won three league titles during his first stint.

Matthews confirmed the decision was made due to the experienced tactician knowing the DNA of Matsatsansa as they look to rebuild the club to challenge for silverware again.

While the club has yet to officially confirm signings, Matthews stated they’ve held back on ins and outs while they were in the process of finding Kaitano Tembo’s official successor.

However, the signing of Grant Magerman was already secured while Tembo was still at the helm but it’s been official now after his loan stint at Swallows from Mamelodi Sundowns officially ended last month.

“We’re got a solid base to work with, we’ll make a couple of signings to tweak the team here and there but I’d say 15 to 20 of the players in out squad who are in the mid or low twenties and we have a coach like Gavin we can mould them to [challenge],” Matthews said.

“We’ve got a bit of experience with Siyabonga Nlapho, [Onismor] Bhasera, Bradley Grobler, [Thamsanqa] Gabuza but we probably need to get more, like in midfield our oldest player is probably Jamie Webber at 24-year-old, then you talking about [Selaelo] Rasebotja, [Thalente] Mbatha, Jesse Donn – Grant Margeman, these are all young 24 [year olds] or younger players.

“We need a bit more stability there, in defence and hopefully we will challenge for the top-four in the next season.”

As previously reported in iDiski Times, Margerman has secured a season-long loan with United ahead of the new season while Sipho Mbule has head in the other direction to Chloorkop.
