The results will be available through three primary channels which are: online via DBE website, in print and from candidate’s school, starting from 6am.
Checking Matric Results 2023 Online
To access your results online, you will need to have your exam number and your ID number. Once you have those follow the steps below
- Open your web browser and go to: https://www.education.gov.za/
- On the DBE website, scroll down to the right sidebar and click on “Examination Results.”
- Now, click on the link that says “2023 Senior Certificate (SC) Exam Results.” This link will only be active after the results have been released on January 19, 2024.
- A new page will open. Locate the field that says “Enter Your Exam No.”
- Enter your exam number carefully and press the “Search” button as shown on the image below.
- Your matric results will appear on the screen.
- Review your results and take pride in your accomplishments.
- Download or print your detailed Statement of Results for future reference.

Past Matric Results Performance Overview | Matric Results 2022
The 2022 matric results saw a significant improvement in the overall pass rate, with 580 555 candidates achieving success, representing 80.1% of the total number of test-takers. This marks a 3.7% increase from the previous year’s pass rate of 76.4%.
The ministry attributes this positive trend to enhanced quality control measures, including stricter teacher training and certification, as well as regular review of examination centers by experts.
In addition to the overall pass rate, there was also a notable increase in the number of candidates qualifying for different levels of postsecondary education.
Specifically, 278,814 candidates qualified for Bachelor studies at universities, representing 38.4% of the total number of exam-takers. Additionally, 193,357 candidates achieved a diploma pass, while 108,159 earned a Higher Certificate pass.
Provincial performance also showed improvement, with the Free State leading the pack with an 88.5% pass rate. Gauteng followed closely behind with 84.4%, while KwaZulu Natal achieved an 83% pass rate.
The Western Cape secured an 81.4% pass rate, while North West recorded 79.8%. The Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga achieved 77.3% and 76.8% pass rates, respectively. Northern Cape recorded a pass rate of 74.2%, while Limpopo secured a 72.1% pass rate.
These results demonstrate the dedication and hard work of learners, teachers, and education officials across South Africa. The improvements in pass rates, particularly in the number of students qualifying for higher education, indicate a positive trend in the country’s education system.
