A wasteful Orlando Pirates were defeated 1-0 by Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday evening.
Amadou Soukouna scored the all important penalty in the 80th minute, after Olisa Ndah had brought down Siboniso Conco.
It was a game they had no business to lose, but Bienvenu Eva Nga and Zakhele Lepasa were the main culprits as they missed two best chances for Pirates in the second half.
Pirates had possession galore but they just could not find the target to beat King Ndlovu in goals.
If Pirates had won this game, they would have gone back top of the DStv Premiership standing that is now occupied by Royal AM.
This is the second defeat of the season for Pirates, having lost to Chippa United previously.
As Maritzburg beat Pirates, it is their first league win since December 2016.
Despite that, Pirates started the front foot, seeing former Maritzburg United old boy Fortune Makaringe flashed the shot wide.
Then there was a power failure in the early first half, leading to the referee to halt the match in the 30th minute. It was not surprising when referee Tshidiso Maruping added 10 minutes in the first half.
With power restored, Pirates were forced into an early change as Vincent Pule was stretchered off and replaced by Zakhele Lepasa. It looked like a hamstring which had been troubling the winger for sometime as it was a harmless tackle.
While Innocent Maela, flashed a header wide with King Ndlovu rooted in the poles, Eva Nga and Lepasa should have done better but they let themselves down. Out of nowhere, Maritzburg got a penalty and Soukouna tucked it away.
