Margeman – Swallows Loan Move Was A Shock

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Grant Margeman has finally broken his silence following last season’s late loan move to Swallows.

Margeman joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Ajax Cape Town (now known as Cape Town Spurs) in July of 2019 following a few good seasons he had with Ajax. The Cape Town-born joined a Sundowns side that was a well-oiled machine and it wasn’t always going to be hard to break into the starting line-up.

The 24-year-old spent only one season with Masandawana, for the 2020/21 campaign, when he won the league title with the club, but only made three appearances in all competitions, which saw him being loaned out the following season.

The Bafana Bafana player explained that he never saw the loan move to ‘The Dube Birds’ happening after he was already in talks with Stellenbosch and he was ready to leave but a call during the night changed everything.

“To be honest no, my mind was fully set on coming to join Stellenbosch FC because I had talks with the coach, I had talks with the chairman and my agent had talks with the CEO of Stellenbosch FC,” Margeman told iDiski Times.

“We were close to finalizing the deal, I was just waiting for Stellenbosch to have an agreement with Sundowns.

“As I was set to leave for Cape Town, my agent called me and he said ‘you might have to go to Swallow FC’ because there’s something on the line.

“I went to Sundown’s offices and spoke with management. And I told them I need to have a day or two to think about this. My mind was already set to coming to Cape Town. Because I knew I will be a bit closer to family and have a bit of comfort.

“I also decided to stay or join Swallows after I had a chat with Tlhopie,  the chairman of the club at Sundowns, because he advised me that I’ve been so many years playing for Ajax, and I’ve just joined Sundowns a season ago and now I want to go back to Cape Town, it’s gonna be me giving up.”
