Margeman Discusses Sundowns Future After Shining At SuperSport

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Grant Margeman is excited about the future after winning the Players’ Player of the Season during his season-long loan at SuperSport United.

Margeman, 24, was widely considered one of the brightest midfield prospects in the country when he joined Sundowns from Ajax Cape Town back in 2020, but fierce competition and some fitness issues prevented the player from a first-team breakthrough.

He subsequently left the club on loan to Swallows last season where he excelled in his midfield role to help them retain their top-flight status before another loan stint with Matsatsansa – where he’s been one of the first names on the team sheet under Gavin Hunt.

The box-to-box midfielder featured in 26 of the 30 league games as they finished third in the league and chipped in with two goals and three assists which has led to a couple of preliminary Bafana Bafana call-ups under head coach Hugo Broos.

“I think for me personally, this season, I’ve found joy again in my football at this club, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity they’ve given me, now it’s obviously between the two clubs, Sundowns and SuperSport,” Margeman said when asked about his season by iDiski Times.

“I need to hear from Coach Rulani [Mokwena], his assessment of my loan spell, what he thinks. So for me obviously, I need to hear what they have to say and I’ll take it from there.”

When pressed about where he could see himself at the start of the 2023/24 season, Margeman said he’s willing to return to his parent club, but reiterated the decision is not up to him.

“I can’t say what I want right now, at the moment it’s just about challenging myself, bringing the best out of myself. As I said, we’ll have to see what the coach has to say first, we have to see if I’m in his plans next season or what.

“I’m always willing to go back to Sundowns, I had a fantastic season now at SuperSport, so we’ll see when the new season starts.”

With two years remaining on his current Sundowns contract, which includes a one-year, the dynamic midfielder admits that an outright sale is unlikely but is willing to commit to whoever has a plan for him in the upcoming season.

“It will be hard for clubs to buy a player out when he has so many years left on his contract, but you know the clubs have done business in the past, you saw in the last seasons,” Margeman added.

“But it all depends on the club and whether Gavin sees me as part of his own plans next season, or if it’s Coach Rulani, so it’s for me to wait and here.”

Margeman made only three appearances in the colours of Sundowns since initially signing for the club from the Urban Warriors three years ago. On Tuesday, he was included in Hugo Broos’ 34-man preliminary Bafana Bafana squad to face Morocco.
