Recent reports have debunked the graphic images circulating on social media, depicting a human body supposedly mauled by a lion on the N2 in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Contrary to initial fears, these photos were not taken along the N2 highway, as claimed.
Truck drivers who travel on the N2 in northern KZN were unnerved by messages warning them about the pictures.
However, The Witness has confirmed that the images actually originated from Dinokeng Game Reserve in Hammanskraal, Gauteng.
The victim, identified as Johannes Matshe (30), worked as an employee for a landowner. Tragically, he lost his life when he was attacked by three lions while walking through the reserve on foot one Sunday night.
The reserve’s fencing team discovered human remains the following Monday morning, prompting a swift response from the Operations Manager.
The South African Police Service was informed immediately, launching an ongoing investigation into the incident.
In response, Dinokeng Game Enterprises, which manages the wildlife at the Dinokeng Game Reserve, has applied for permission to euthanize the three lions involved.
This application was submitted to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Environment.
The decision to euthanize the lions was made after taking into account the emotional toll on the victim’s family, friends, and landowners, as well as various factors including the game reserve’s Environmental Development Plan and lion management plan.
This unfortunate event highlights the importance of both visitors and landowners exercising caution and adhering to guidelines when interacting with wildlife within the reserve.
Streicher, the game reserve’s spokesperson, emphasized the need to respect rules and practice responsible behavior to create a safer environment for everyone.
It’s essential to note that walking within the Dinokeng Game Reserve, especially at night, is strictly prohibited according to the reserve’s regulations.
