Golden Arrows goalkeeper coach Davies Phiri has said Royal AM mentor John Maduka has excelled with aplomb this season but faces a near-impossible task to win the DStv Premiership coach of the year award.

Phiri spoke to FARPost in a question-and-answer interview on a wide range of issues on a Zambia football WhatsApp group.

The former Chipolopolo keeper said Maduka had exceeded expectations this season with Royal AM, who went into the match against Orlando Pirates while lying fifth on the log table.

“Maduka has done extremely well this season, and they have a game to play which can take them to number two if they beat Pirates on Friday,” he said.

He, however, said it was not easy for the former Bloemfontein Celtic captain to shrug off competition from Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Mangoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena and Cape Town City’s Eric Tinkler.

“He has done what everyone didn’t expect, and I wish him well. However, it is tough for him to win coach of the season because Sundowns coaches have won the league, a cup, and they are in the final of another cup, and they might win it again,” Phiri said.

Phiri used to play for Durban Stars and Golden Arrows at the peak of his career in South Africa.

The former Zambian international has also worked as goalkeeper coach for AmaZulu, Nathi Lions, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Tuks and Thanda Zulu Royal.

The CAF A licence holder represented Zambia and had a successful career with Kabwe Warriors in Zambia. Phiri also served as Zambia goalkeeper coach.
