Divine Lunga says he doesn’t know if he still has a future with Mamelodi Sundowns, after the Tshwane giants loaned him to Golden Arrows this season.
Lunga spent one season with Sundowns after he was signed at the start of 2021/22 after an impressive display with Abafana Bes’Thende in the previous three seasons.
But when he joined Sundowns, the left-back position was fiercely contested as the Tshwane giants could call upon two established stars – Lyle Lakay and Aubrey Modiba.
That led to Lunga having to settle on a peripheral figure in the side last term, playing only 10 matches in all competitions. This is despite Sundowns having played 49 matches across all competition where they won the league, MTN8 and Nedbank Cup trophies.
In order to free up one of the club’s foreign spot, Downs decided to loan Lunga back to Arrows this season, but he hasn’t given up on his future at Chloorkop.
“Everything is on my side and age as well,” Lunga replied in short to iDiski Times when asked if he still has a future with Sundowns.
When was pressed why he struggled at Sundowns, he said: “For this question I can’t answer because the coaches are the ones who know. But when I arrived there they told me there’s a competition and I’ll have to fight for my position. But I’m going to fight.”
Since Lunga arrived at Arrows, he has kept that consistency of running up and down on the left, having featured in five matches since he joined.
Lunga can show his parent club this coming weekend when Arrows visit the stuttering DStv Premiership champions at Absa Tuks Stadium on Saturday (8pm). Unlike what happened to SuperSport United whose loan agreements with Sundowns saw Grant Magerman, Ricardo Goos and Thabang Sibanyoni not being allowed to feature against their parent club, Arrows coach Vilakazi said as far as he knows Lunga is not barred to face Sundowns.
However, the last time Arrows played against Sundowns it was disastrous as the Tshwane giants crushed the Durban-club by 6-0 at Loftus Stadium last season, leading to coach Lehlohonolo Seema to be sacked and the appointment of Vusi Vilakazi and Mabhuti Khenyeza as caretaker coaches before they were given the roles on a permanent basis during the off season.
Lunga, though, having seen TS Galaxy and SuperSport beat Sundowns this season already, fancies his side’s chances too.
“We are going to fight as a team and also together. If we lose, we will lose together. If we win, we will win together,” he said.
