Cape Town City have beaten Maritzburg United to the signature of Wayde Lekay who was looked set to join John Maduka’s side this week.

Lekay, 25, was subject on interest from City back in the January transfer window but after some contractual disputes with Galaxy, they opted against moving for the forward.

When he became available as a free agent after parting ways with the Rockets, Lekay went on trial at Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM and the Citizens rekindled their interest but head coach Eric Tinkler was left so impressed by 18-year-old Luke Daniels in pre-season, that he preferred to show faith in the young striker.

However, after three defeats from the opening three games, it became evident last season’s runners-up needed to bolster their attacking options the player has since penned a contract with the Citizens, as first reported by FARPost.

iDiski Times has learnt he signed the contract this morning and rejected a move to the Team of Choice and City are not done adding to their squad before the transfer window shuts on 22 September.

Lekay scored four goals in 17 league games for the Rockets last season but the City technical team is confident he can take his game to new heights at the DHL Stadium this season.
