Kouki – Sundowns Favourites To Win The Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns are favourites to win the 2022/23 CAF Champions League title, according to CR Belouizdad head coach Nabil Kouki.

After the 6-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of the DStv Premiership champions, the Tunisian coach stated Sundowns are the best team in Africa right now based on their performances in the competition this season.

Having beat Al Ahly home and away, and their 4-1 thumping of the Algerian champions in Algiers at the Nelson Mandela Stadium last week, Kouki feels there’s not many who can potentially stand in their way to get their second star, despite the presence of reigning champions Wydad, record ten-time champions Al Ahly and four-time winners Esperance.

“Obviously yes, the quality of players at Mamelodi Sundowns, the way they play, in my opinion, they are obviously one of the best teams I can say can win the Champions League,” Kouki said when asked by iDiski Times about the praise of Sundowns.

The former ES Setif boss went on to state they are now looking to move on from the heavy loss at Masandawana and focus on the three other competitions they are in contention for.

“First of all, I want to congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns… I want to congratulate the coach, I want to congratulate the technical staff for advancing from the quarter-final.

“For me, my team has to close this page, I have still the league in Algeria, the Super Cup, the Arab Cup, so we need to plan – I have too many missions [to compete for and] to plan for, and congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns.”
