Khune – Some Players Are Starstruck

Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has suggested some players don’t believe they are playing for the club yet and are yet to come out of their shells.

Amakhosi have started the season with two wins, two draws and three defeats in their opening seven league games and languish in 14th place.

With the results not what the supporters were expecting in what was dubbed as the fresh revival under new head coach Arthur Zwane, pressure has been rising from the fans in the stands and on social media.

Khune who’s been part of the first team since 2004, and experienced the highs of winning major silverware at the club amongst some of the most decorated players in Amakhosi history, feels some of the latest generations have not got to grips with what it takes to be a player at the Soweto giants.

“It’s affecting me badly because every player has his role and responsibility to play in making sure the club goes back to the glory days,” Khune said at the Village on Thursday morning.

“But like I said, for now… a lot of us. I think we are still, I don’t know whether to call it starstruck, or we don’t believe we are finally playing for Kaizer Chiefs.

“We haven’t come out of our shells yet. So that’s something we need to do, realise that we are the Kaizer Chiefs and start performing like a Kaizer Chiefs player.

“The fans demand results, they demand consistency, it’s something we need to realise and improve on as individuals.”

Chiefs take on SuperSport United next in the DStv Premiership when they host their former coach Gavin Hunt at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening (20h00).
