Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune was the hero in his side’s MTN8 quarter-final win over Stellenbosch FC and also set an impressive record in the match.
Khune, 35, stole the headlines after saving penalties from Dino Van Rooyen and Luezi Likuta during Chiefs’ 4-3 penalty shootout win at Danie Craven Stadium.
It was the goalkeeper’s first appearance for the Amakhosi in over a year, with his last match dating back to last year’s MTN8 quarter-final defeat on penalties to Mamelodi Sundowns.
That match was the only appearance Khune made in the 2021/22 campaign, while Sunday’s game was his first appearance in 2022/23.

Both games ensured Khune wrote his name in the club’s history books as he’s now made at least one appearance for the Glamour Boys to feature in at least one match for the club in 16 successive seasons in the Premier Soccer League era (since 1996/97), as the club confirmed.
Khune impressed head coach Arthur Zwane in the match, saying the veteran goalkeeper grabbed his chance “with both hands”.
It remains to be seen whether Khune will continue between the sticks for Chiefs or whether Brandon Petersen, who was in goal for the last two DStv Premiership games after Bruce Bvuma had started the first three games of campaign, will return.
Chiefs will return to action on Saturday, when they host in-form AmaZulu at the FNB Stadium at 17:30.
