JUDGEMENT DAY FOR “Woolies Looter”

Mbuso Moloi, famously known as the “Woolies looter,” has received a sentence of 18 months of correctional supervision under house arrest.

The sentence was delivered by Magistrate Melanie de Jager at the Durban Magistrates Court on Friday, July 7. Moloi had pleaded guilty to theft and contravention of traffic regulations earlier in March 2023.

Although initially facing a three-year prison term, the magistrate suspended the sentence for five years, provided that Moloi does not commit a similar offense during that period.

As part of the sentence, Moloi will be subjected to house arrest and community service for 16 hours per month. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine of R1000 for contravening the Road Management Act.

Mbuso Moloi gained national attention in July 2021 when he was captured on camera looting a Woolworths store in Glenwood, Durban, during the widespread unrest that affected KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng.

The footage showed him leaving the store with a basket filled with goods, which he proceeded to load into a Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe. It was later revealed that the vehicle’s license plate did not match the information on the license disc.

With his sentence now determined, Moloi will be required to abide by the conditions of his correctional supervision and comply with the legal system to avoid further consequences.
