South African musician Toya Delazy has sparked heated debate online after revealing she cannot afford to return to South Africa for a scheduled appearance on MacG’s Podcast and Chill.

As reported by Briefly, the singer and songwriter told fans she doesn’t have the money to come back to South Africa, after being invited as a guest on MacG’s chart-topping YouTube podcast.

Delazy, who has been based in London since 2017, asked her followers for donations to cover the cost of travel.

Podcast and Chill regularly draws millions of views and has become a career-defining stop for many local celebrities.

News of the crowdfunding request spread quickly online. Social media reaction was immediate and polarised, with social media buzzing over the revelation.

While others questioned her request, some highlighted the realities that come with being an independent artist. Delazy left major labels to own her masters. Without corporate backing, international travel for promo is self-funded.

“If we want her on the biggest SA platform, we can help get her there,” one X user wrote.

However, some users called it “tone deaf” to ask struggling South Africans for money while living abroad.

Others asked why Podcast and Chill, a monetised YouTube show, wouldn’t cover guest travel.
