More than 800 protesters marched through Durban’s central business district (CBD) on Friday, 9 October, as violent clashes with police and widespread looting brought parts of the city to a standstill.

At least six shops were looted as demonstrators moved through the city, demanding that foreign nationals leave South Africa.

According to the report Shops looted as more than 800 protesters march through Durban CBD, the protesters travelled from West Street towards South Beach and the Point area, chanting slogans as tensions escalated.

Violence Erupts During Durban Protests

Friday’s demonstrations followed violent unrest on Thursday, during which vehicles were set alight, businesses were looted and foreign nationals were reportedly assaulted.

Some foreign nationals were reportedly forced to flee for their safety as violence spread through parts of Durban.

The latest march saw protesters clash with police while businesses faced further looting.

Authorities had not yet confirmed the full extent of Friday night’s damage or whether arrests had been made in connection with the incidents.

Police Deploy Additional Officers

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers were using stun grenades, teargas and rubber bullets when necessary to control crowds.

Additional police officers were deployed to Durban, with SAPS, eThekwini Metro Police and private security personnel monitoring the demonstrations.

Netshiunda said intelligence officers were working to identify persons of interest, while detectives would gather evidence and make arrests where appropriate.

Police maintained that their response aimed to protect lives and property while respecting the public’s right to protest.

Government Calls for Calm

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia acknowledged concerns surrounding illegal immigration but stressed that these must be addressed through lawful processes.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli also called for discussions with protest organisers to prevent further violence.

Ntuli warned that looting and the destruction of businesses could threaten jobs and investment across the province.

Despite the increased police presence, tensions remained high as protesters continued marching through Durban on Friday night.

Authorities continued efforts to maintain order while investigating incidents linked to the unrest.
