Injured forward, Thembi Kgatlana could not contain her joy at the sight of Banyana Banyana claiming their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco on Saturday evening.
Kgatlana went wild, left her chair and abandoned her crutches to join Banyana Banyana’s title party from her home in South Africa.
The winger posted a video clip on tweeter showing how she reacted when South Africa saw off Morocco 2-1 in the final to win what had been an elusive piece of silverware for the Desiree Ellis side.
The NWSL club Racing Louisville FC’s new signing is seen in what appears to be a living room, jumping over five times using her right leg with the other, in Plaster of Paris, hanging.
A woman then appears to join the Banyana Banyana star at the party by embracing her while dancing.
“BANYANA BANYANA A NEW ERA HAS BEGUN!” Kgatlana tweeted via her handle @Kgatlanathe1st.
The 26-year-old started the WAFCON campaign with Banyana Banyana but then suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon injury, which ruled her out for the rest of the campaign earlier this month.
Kgatlana, who returned home weeks ago, confirmed on Friday to have undergone surgery successfully.
The forward suffered the injury during a Group C match against Botswana. She was stretchered off in the 69th minute.
Banyana Banyana went on to win the game 1-0, then the rest of the matches to claim the WAFCON title, which they lost to Nigeria’s Super Falcons in Ghana a few years ago.
Kgatlana recently joined American top side Racing Louisville on a year-long contract after leaving Atletico Madrid in Spain.
The South African has made a return to the American League, where she featured for the Houston Dash in 2018 before moving to Spain.
Kgatlana tallied seven goals and three assists as Atletico Madrid finished fourth in the Primera División and reached the Supercopa Feminina final.
