The South African Informal Traders Alliance has asked the government to remove value-added tax and tariffs on all chicken products.
The organisation — which represents over a million informal and micro-businesses — says that this would provide some relief to informal traders.
It would also benefit low-income households.
The call from the industry body comes as higher inflation continues to push the price of food and transport up.
This, while wages remain the same or increase at lower levels.
Inflation figures released earlier this week show inflation rose to 5.9 percent in March.
Consumer inflation is expected to surge in the coming months.
This may lead the Reserve Bank to continue raising interest rates.
