Hunt Addresses Williams Situation, Reveals Khune Advice

New SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has addressed Ronwen Williams’ imminent move to Mamelodi Sundowns and revealed which transfer advice he gave Itumeleng Khune.

Hunt, who turned 57 this week, has returned to Matsatsantsa for a first time since 2013.

He has a lot of work ahead of himself, trying to prepare the squad for the new DStv Premiership season, which kicks off in less than four weeks.

However, Hunt could lose goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, one of the key players in his new squad, who is understood to be close to joining Sundowns, admitting the situation is out of his hands.

“This has been going on since before I came and I was in the management meeting and I just herd what was said,” he told Thabiso Mosia on SAFMSportOn.

“I just gave my opinion and obviously it’s out of my hands now.

“You got to look at it from all parties and hopefully we resolve this as quickly as possible, either way. My point is you can’t take a big asset like that and not replace him.

“I had the same problem when he came in. We lost Andre [Arendse] and Dennis Onyango. We had a problem with the goalkeeper the one year. We had a foreign goalkeeper and it didn’t really work out and I saw this boy in the U18s and I said ‘I’m gonna put him in’.

“Everyone said I’m crazy but I put him in and the rest is history.”

Hunt also said he understands the player’s desire to set himself up financially and even revealed which advice he gave Itumeleng Khune during his time at Kaizer Chiefs.

“Every player wants to win trophies, the rest will follow, the finances and all,” he added.

“Obviously he’s at an age, he has matured as a goalkeeper. Financially, he can set himself up so he doesn’t need to work for the rest of his life.

“That’s important and I think people forget about that, at the end of the day it is about the financial situation for any player all over the world.

“I said he should’ve gone up to the Golf. I told Itu Khune as well, I said ‘you’re wasting your time, you should play in the Golf for a year or two and you can retire’.”
