Hundreds of rabies cases detected in Eastern Cape

There’s an extensive rabies outbreak in the Eastern Cape. From the beginning of January 2021 to date, around 400 cases have been reported in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, 42 cases in Amathole district and 27 cases in OR Tambo district.

The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform’s Vusimuzi Rozani says vaccinations and awareness are vital in trying to control the disease.

“The vaccinations and awareness are paramount in the control of the disease. If we can get a huge turnout then we will control the spread,” Rozani said.

Everyone must know that rabies kills. If we can get that message across on a daily basis that would be great. We encourage people to bring their animals… for vaccinations so we can stop the spread between the animals and the humans as well.
