Gordinho – Form Goes Out The Window In The Derby

Lorenzo Gordinho is looking forward to being involved in his first official Cape Derby when Stellenbosch hosts Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership this evening.

Gordinho signed for City last month after spending two and a half years in Denmark and has featured twice for Eric Tinkler’s team so far.

While City are currently on a three-match unbeaten run, the hosts are winless in their last nine games, but the former Kaizer Chiefs defender warns that in derbies form sometimes can not be a factor, so they need to be at their best on the day.

City are currently seventh, seven points ahead of Stellies, who are 15th. After excellent campaigns last season, both teams were disappointed with the first half of their seasons so far and will be pushing to turn things around.

A victory in the derby could be the ideal catalyst for a good run.

“I think it’s going to be a very tough game,” Gordinho told iDiski Times

“And I also think that the form that they’re in, and we’re in goes out the window when it comes to games like this.

“It’s a derby, it’s a Cape Derby. And they know us, and we know them. We played them a couple of times during December now.

“So everything’s gonna either play a big part, or it’s not gonna play a part at all, and it’s just gonna come down to on the day who performs the best, who is willing to give it more for the win, and hopefully have the luck on the day to win.

“So I think it’s gonna be a very tough game, but one that we’re looking forward to.

“And it’s these games that you enjoy as a professional — when it’s sort of got a bit of a hype or a factor about it — that it’s a Cape Derby.

“So now it obviously elevates the performance a little bit. So I’m looking forward to it.”
