- The Gautrain officially becomes Gauteng government property at the end of March 2026 following final BCC repayments.
- The system’s valuation has risen from an initial R26 billion investment to an estimated R45–R50 billion.
- The provincial government is in the final stages of appointing a new operator to manage the rail network.
The Gauteng provincial government is set to officially inherit the Gautrain as a state asset at the end of March 2026.
This follows the final repayment to the Bombela Concession Company (BCC), which has managed the rail system’s design, construction, and operations since 2006.
During the 2026 budget tabling, Finance MEC Lebogang Maile lauded the project as a premier example of a successful public-private partnership (PPP).
Originally constructed for R26 billion, the infrastructure’s value has nearly doubled, with current estimates placing the asset’s worth between R45 billion and R50 billion.
As the 15-year maintenance and operation contract concludes, the province is finalising the transition to a new era of management.
MEC Maile confirmed that the selection of a new operator is now at an “advanced stage,” with the preferred bidder expected to be announced by the end of the month.
