Former Bafana Bafana captain Dean Furman has named the toughest team he’s faced and revealed that he’s proud that Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates didn’t win a trophy while he was in South Africa.

Furman played for SuperSport United between 2015 and 2020, lifting two Nedbank Cup trophies and one MTN8 Cup, while both Soweto giants didn’t manage to lift any silverware during that spell.

The 33-year-old returned to England and plays for Warrington Rylands 1906 Football Club nowadays but recalled his time in South Africa.

“I have to say one [tough] team that we came up against in South Africa were Sundowns,” Furman told Football N Friends podcast.

“It’s something I’m very proud of actually that during my five-year stay in South Africa, Chiefs and Pirates have won nothing.

“The Soweto giants won nothing. Who won stuff? Sundowns, [Bidvest] Wits and us [SuperSport] essentially.

“We were the Cup kings, we had a nice league run and Sundowns did the rest.”

Furman made 157 appearances for SuperSport and represented South Africa 55 times.
