French side closes in on Percy Tau

French Ligue 2 side Le Havre have reportedly stepped up their negotiations with Egyptian football powerhouse Al Ahly over the possible signing of South African forward Percy Tau.

Several media outlets in Egypt, such as FilGoal and KingFut, have reported that representatives of Havre have tabled their bid for the unsettled Bafana Bafana star, hoping to snatch him in the next few hours.

FilGoal reports that officials from the French side officially approached Al Ahly on Thursday to seal the transfer before the international transfer window in Europe closes Friday.

“We want to determine our position because the registration window in Europe closes within two days. No club from South Africa has contacted us [about Percy Tau],” the source told FilGoal.

The Al Ahly source refuted reports that the Cairo-based club transfer-listed the South African forward alongside five other players a few weeks ago, insisting that he remains the club’s reliable senior player despite missing 24 games through injury since moving to Cairo.

Le Havre, who were relegated from the French Ligue 1 in the 2008/09 season, want to sign the 28-year-old South African on loan with an option of buying him eventually.

Percy Tau has not had the best of his careers at the Cairo-based popular side as he featured in just 31 games for the Reds, scoring eight goals and providing six assists across all competitions, largely due to a recurring muscle tear injury.

It is reported that Percy Tau is not accessing the best medical treatments in Egypt, hence the recurrence of the injuries.

His future became even more uncertain when coach Pitso Mosimane, who signed him on a four-year contract last year from Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League in England, resigned from Al Ahly’s coaching job in June.

The spiky-haired former Mamelodi Sundowns star last featured for Al Ahly on August 10 2022, in a league game against Al-Masry.

Mosimane’s successor Ricardo Soares, too, has been sacked barely two months and some weeks on the job.
