Former Nurse and Ex-Gardener Sentenced to Life for R6 Million Insurance Fraud Murder
A former nurse and her ex-gardener have each been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Busisiwe Nxumalo in a chilling R6 million insurance fraud scheme that shocked the Gauteng High Court.
The court found that Hapiness Sithembile Xulu (49) orchestrated the killing of her stepdaughter, allegedly taking out multiple life and funeral insurance policies in Nxumalo’s name and naming herself as the sole beneficiary. She then allegedly recruited her former gardener, Simon Isaac Mogale (40), to carry out the murder.
Nxumalo was killed in January 2022 after being lured to Johannesburg under the pretext of employment. Evidence presented in court showed she was later stabbed in a veld area near Lenasia South. Mogale implicated Xulu, stating she instructed him to carry out the killing in exchange for money.
Although there were no direct eyewitnesses linking Xulu to the murder, the court said overwhelming circumstantial evidence pointed to her as the mastermind behind the plot.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the outcome, saying the case demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated investigations in dismantling complex, financially motivated crimes.
Both accused will serve life sentences for murder, bringing closure to a case that has drawn national attention for its brutality and calculated financial motive.
