FIFA World Cup: Bafana Bafana’s expected starting 11 vs Canada

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos appears set to resist the temptation to make changes when South Africa face Canada, with the Belgian expected to reward the players who impressed in the memorable victory over South Korea.

The biggest selection dilemma comes in midfield following the return of Teboho Mokoena from suspension. The Mamelodi Sundowns star is often one of the first name on the team sheet. However, Broos may decide against disrupting a combination that delivered one of Bafana Bafana’s most complete performances in years.

HUGO BROOS FACES BAFANA BAFANA MIDFIELD DILEMMA

Sphephelo Sithole and Thalente Mbatha formed an excellent partnership in the heart of midfield against South Korea. Their energy, physicality and tactical discipline allowed South Africa to control key moments of the match. They made a strong case to keep their places.

Broos has repeatedly shown throughout his tenure that he values consistency and is reluctant to break up a winning side. That approach could see Mokoena start on the bench before being introduced later in the match if needed.

NO REASON TO CHANGE A WINNING FORMULA

Elsewhere, South Africa are expected to remain unchanged. The attacking trio behind Evidence Makgopa, particularly Relebohile Mofokeng and Thapelo Maseko. They created plenty of problems against South Korea and will be looking to carry that confidence into another tough international test.

The back four also look set to retain their places after producing a disciplined display. Canada are expected to provide a different challenge through their pace and athleticism.

If Broos does keep faith with the same starting XI, it would send a clear message that performances, rather than reputation alone, determine selection in the national team.

Expected South Africa XI: Ronwen Williams (GK, captain), Khuliso Mudau, Ime Okon, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Aubrey Modiba, Sphephelo Sithole, Thalente Mbatha, Relebohile Mofokeng, Oswin Appollis, Thapelo Maseko and Evidence Makgopa.
