FIFA to honour Jayden Adams with minute’s silence at World Cup quarter-finals

FIFA has reportedly confirmed that a minute’s silence will be observed in memory of Jayden Adams before Saturday’s FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

The 25-year-old Bafana Bafana midfielder passed away at his home in Cape Town on Saturday, sending shockwaves through South African football.

According to reports, players in both the Norway vs England clash (23:00 SA time) and the Argentina vs Switzerland quarter-final, which kicks off at 03:00 on Sunday (SA time), will wear black armbands as a mark of respect.

Led the tributes

FIFA president Gianni Infantino led the tributes to the Mamelodi Sundowns star, honouring Adams’ contribution to the game and extending his condolences to the player’s family, friends, team-mates and the South African football community.

“It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign,” Infantino wrote.

“My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.”

Mamelodi Sundowns also posted on their social media page, paying tribute to the former Stellenbosch FC star.

“It is with heartfelt sorrow that Mamelodi Sundowns can confirm the passing of highly talented Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams.”

The Chairman and the Motsepe Family, the Board of Directors, Technical Team, Players, Management, Staff, Supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC & the entire Yellow Nation express their deepest condolences to the family and friends as we mourn the loss of Jayden.”

Jayden Adams dies at 25

“We pray that the Almighty God comforts and strengthens the Adams family, his friends and everyone that knew him. Sundowns respectfully ask that the family’s privacy be honoured as they grieve this profound loss,” the club wrote.

Adams featured in three matches for Bafana Bafana at FIFA World Cup 2026, helping them reach the knockout rounds.
