Anti-Gang Unit constable laid to rest in Limpopo after Reiger Park ambush
Constable Thapelo Kleinbooi Tlometsane, a 29-year-old member of the Gauteng Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, is being laid to rest today, Sunday in Gedroogde village, Zebediela, outside Polokwane in Limpopo.
Tlometsane and his colleague, Constable Siphiwe Sibeko, were fatally shot in an ambush on Friday 7 August 2026 while responding to gunfire in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni. The pair had been on patrol when they drove towards the sound of shots and came under attack. Two civilians were also killed in the incident.
A memorial service for both officers was held earlier in Westdene, Johannesburg. Sibeko was buried on Saturday in Springs. Tlometsane’s official funeral, attended by family, colleagues, community members, and senior police leadership, is taking place today, at his family home in Limpopo. Deputy Police Minister Dr Polly Boshielo and Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane are also in attendance.
Family members remembered Tlometsane as a quiet, dedicated young man who avoided the spotlight. His brother David described him as someone who did not seek attention and was committed to his work.
In her tribute, Dimpane said the loss was felt across the entire police service and that Tlometsane had been taken by “a ruthless criminal” before he could reach his full potential. She emphasised that the officers had moved towards danger in the line of duty. A 23-year-old suspect, Regan Collis, has been arrested and appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court; police say investigations continue and further arrests are expected.
SAPS leadership has repeatedly stated that the deaths of the two Anti-Gang Unit members must not be in vain and that those responsible will be pursued.
