Eskom has announced that Stage 3 load-shedding will persist until 05:00 on Thursday (18 January 2024).
The power utility previously planned to implement Stage 4 load-shedding from 16:00 on Sunday (14 January) but said this was no longer necessary due to sustained improved generation capacity.
“Due to the sustained generation performance and the recovery of emergency reserves for the week ahead, Stage 3 load-shedding will continue to be implemented until 05:00 on Thursday, 18 January 2024,” it said.

Eskom currently has 8,843MW of generation capacity offline for planned maintenance, with a further 13,981MW unavailable due to breakdowns.
However, it anticipates that 2,721MW of generating capacity will be returned to the grid by Wednesday, 17 January.
“Eskom Power Station General Managers and their teams are working diligently to ensure that the 2,721MW of generating capacity is returned to service by Wednesday,” it said.
The power utility said it would continue to monitor the power system closely and communicate any significant changes if they occur.
“The slight improvement in generation capacity as well as the recovery of emergency reserves for the week ahead has enabled Eskom not to implement Stage 4 load-shedding from 16:00 today as previously communicated,” it said.
