Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has admitted that she still has lots of work to do before she perfects her side ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup due to be played in Australia and New Zealand next year.
This comes after Banyana succumbed to a 6-0 thrashing to Brazil at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Monday night.
Goals from Adriana Leal da Silva, Debora de Oliveira (brace), a Beatriz Joao penalty, Maria da Silva and Kathellen Sousa sealed the South Americans’ successful tour in South Africa on a high.
The three-time CAF Women’s Coach of the Year claims that they are less than halfway to finding their best form to be able to match top teams like Brazil.
“In the beginning, we spoke about minimising our mistakes, being brave, how to press them and creating opportunities. However, we didn’t start well. I think the first goal we gave away was a rush of blood and then I thought after that we played better.
“We also spoke about concentration, but again we gave a silly goal, went in tried to address it immediately after that. You know the mistakes that we make, top teams like Brazil take advantage of them and when we get the opportunity we don’t utilise them. But I felt like when we were on the ball we looked really good as we created half chances. But all-round the results weren’t great.” Ellis told SAFA media in a post-match interview.
The 59-year-old mentor revealed that her side was so far off the pace as her troops couldn’t match the level [standard] of the Copa América Femenina champions.
“I explained to the players that the FIFA World Cup is way up from WAFCON and we still have a lot of work to do. The good thing is that the World Cup is not tomorrow, it is almost a year from now\now on,” she added.
“Lots of the players were tested and now we will have to sit down and look at the footage to see who goes with us on our journey and if they are close, will then decide who stays with us, who do we release and who do we bring in.
“I think there were few positives but I think the negative moments outweighed the positive moments in this match.”
