Africa’s hopes at the 2026 FIFA World Cup received a massive boost on Friday night as Egypt joined Morocco in the Round of 16 after edging Australia 4-2 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw after 120 minutes in their Round of 32 clash at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The Pharaohs produced arguably their finest performance of the tournament, showing discipline, resilience and composure before holding their nerve in the penalty shootout to secure their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory.
Egypt started the brighter of the two sides and deservedly took the lead in the 13th minute. Midfielder Emam Ashour rose highest inside the penalty area to head home after a well-worked attacking move, giving the North Africans the perfect start and silencing the Australian supporters.
The early goal gave Egypt confidence as Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Zizo combined well in attack, while Hamdy Fathy and Marwan Attia controlled the midfield.
Australia struggled to create clear-cut chances during the opening half, with Egypt’s defense marshalled superbly by Yasser Ibrahim and Rami Rabia, who comfortably dealt with the Socceroos’ aerial threat.
Egypt nearly doubled their advantage in the 31st minute when Marmoush broke clear on goal, only to see his low effort brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Patrick Beach.
Just before halftime, Salah came close to making it 2-0 after cutting inside from the right, but his curling effort drifted narrowly wide of the far post.
Australia emerged with renewed intensity after the break and finally found the breakthrough ten minutes into the second half.
In the 55th minute, defender Mohamed Hany unfortunately diverted Aiden O’Neill’s dangerous free-kick into his own net while attempting to clear the ball, leaving Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir with no chance as Australia levelled at 1-1
The equaliser shifted momentum firmly in Australia’s favour.
Nestory Irankunda tested Shobeir with a powerful strike from outside the box in the 63rd minute before Harry Souttar headed narrowly over the crossbar from a corner seven minutes later.
Egypt responded with several dangerous attacks of their own.
Salah nearly restored Egypt’s lead in the 78th minute, but his powerful shot from inside the penalty area was blocked at the last moment by an Australian defender.
Both sides searched for a winner during extra time.
Salah came closest in the 93rd minute after the ball fell kindly inside the box, but he blasted over the crossbar from a promising position. Australia also wasted a golden opportunity in the 118th minute when they earned a free-kick just outside the Egyptian area, only for the effort to crash harmlessly into the defensive wall.
With neither team able to find a decisive goal after 120 minutes, the contest was settled from the penalty spot.
Egypt held their composure magnificently, converting four of their penalties, including an audacious Panenka from captain Mohamed Salah. Australia missed twice, with Harry Souttar firing over the bar before Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar, allowing the Pharaohs to seal a memorable 4-2 shootout victory.
The victory sees Egypt become only the second African nation, alongside Morocco, to reach the Round of 16, where they are expected to face defending champions Argentina. It also keeps alive the continent’s dream of producing another deep World Cup run after several African nations exited during the Round of 32.
