Durban Gen actress Nelisiwe Sibiya who plays Dr Mbali Dlamini shared a fascinating video in a plain outfit suitable for the indoors with no makeup whatsoever. The KZN-based actress then started channelling her inner Zulu dancer and did a traditional Zulu dance at home.
She slightly bent with one foot behind the other and her knees facing the front. With that pose, she moved a bit over one spot and lifted one leg with arm gestures following her move. To seal the dance, she stomped her foot on the floor, and that was it.
Nelisiwe and her character on Durban Gen are two different people. Dr Mbali is a very modernized woman who rarely dubs on the subject of culture and tradition. In real life, however, the actress is proud of her culture and heritage and embodies it as much as possible. She is one of the few celebrities who try their hardest to make traditions live.
Nelisiwe tries her hardest to keep her culture alive. In most of her photo shoots, she wears traditional wear and a lot of beaded jewellery and mini skirts and sometimes even carries some ornaments. On some occasions, the actress wears modern clothes like, for example, a black dress with traditional beaded jewels for that theme of tradition.
Before becoming an actress on the eTV medical drama Durban Gen the actress was a singer. She sang very emotive songs in her native language, isiZulu, and they were very impactful. One of the biggest songs of all time is the song titled Mama KaBafana, which is a song that speaks of a woman who accidentally killed her lover in self-defence.
A producer, Mandla N, used the song as the theme for his show lockdown, which was the South African version of the series called Orange Is the New Black. The actress agreeing to this opened many doors for her, and it was a step into the industry not just as a singer but as an actress.
She has a very impactful voice that is strong and melodic. She loves singing very much, and even though she doesn’t do it full time anymore, she still sings from time to time. When she is in her car, she records videos of herself singing songs in the Maskandi genre and also sings at social gatherings. On the soapie Durban Gen she also sang in one of the funeral scenes, and her voice was very moving.
A lot of people admire this actress for embodying the culture and doing her best to preserve it. Some stars get into the limelight and suddenly forget where they come from. Fame and money have a habit of making culture seem somewhat irrelevant, but when a celebrity doesn’t forget those particular aspects of their lives, then a lot of people admire them. In this sense, the celebrity doesn’t just preserve their culture but also encourages younger people to embrace who they are.
Other than being a very talented singer and a very skilled actress, there is a fascinating aspect of Nelisiwe. She has a lot of humour, and she likes having fun a lot. Sometimes she does these small singing clips and dances for pleasure. On social media, she also has a habit of sharing a lot of jokes and memes, and her followers love it to death.
