Mamelodi Sundowns kingpin Themba Zwane is close to signing a new deal with the Tshwane giants and the deal is expected to be made official soon, iDiski Times has been informed.
Zwane, who is now the club’s skipper, will see his current deal with Tshwane giants expire at the end of this season but his current deal includes a one-year option to renew.
According to sources, the 34-year-old is set to sign a two-year deal with a new one-year option to renew with the Tshwane giants and his representative Jazzman Mahlakgane is set to meet Sundowns to iron out the deal.
However, Zwane’s long-time agent told this publication that they have not started any talks with Sundowns yet.
“Themba Zwane has an option, so there is no other deal except for that he is currently on the second year with an option to renew for next season,” Mahlakgane told iDiski Times.
“There is no other thing that whoever is talking about. The only deal that we currently have is an option for next year.”
When asked if there are any talks with Sundowns about extending his current deal anytime soon, even though it expires only next year and has an option to renew, the agent replied: “Because he has an option, so only when the club accepts the option, that would be the contract, and that will be when we are getting involved in engaging the club,” he added.
“Currently, he is on contract running plus with an option to renew.”
Zwane, a master of playing in the pockets of spaces and devilish in passing ball, made his PSL debut for the Tshwane giants in a 5-1 win over Black Leopards on 30 October 2011 under Dutch coach Johan Neeskens, when he replaced Teko Modise at the age of 22 years, two months and 27 days.
He has been Mr Consistency when it comes to form for the Tshwane in the last couple of years.
The 34-year-old, who Sundowns loaned to Mpumalanga Black Aces in the 2013/14 season when he was coached by the late Clive Barker, has won the DStv Premiership title seven times, three Nedbank Cups, two Telkom Knockout, one MTN8, CAF Champions League in 2016 and CAF Super Cup in the following year.
He was named the PSL Footballer of the Season in 2019/20, as well as Player’s Player of the Season and Midfielder of the Season.

Zwane has featured in 365 appearances for the Tshwane giants, scoring 80 goals in all competitions.
Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena recently described him as a rare breed, saying he is fearful that the country will struggle to get a replacement for him once he calls his time in football.
The late Barker, at Aces, said Zwane has the same ability as that of former Bafana Bafana star Doctor Khumalo, who was the star of the national team when Barker’s side won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 1996.
